ACTFL Language Level Description:
Speakers at this level are able to successfully manage a number of uncomplicated communicative tasks in straightforward social situations. Conversation is restricted to a few of the predictable topics necessary for survival in the target language culture, such as basic personal information, basic objects and a limited number of activities, preferences, and immediate needs. These speakers can respond to simple, direct questions or requests for information; they are able to ask only a very few formulaic questions when asked to do so and produce mostly short, incomplete sentences. Speakers at this level are able to handle a variety of tasks pertaining to the Intermediate level, but are unable to sustain performance at that level.

Course Description:
Level 3: : High Beginner English is comprised of two courses designed to enable students to handle uncomplicated communicative tasks in straightforward social situations and conversations with predictable topics necessary for survival in American culture. In 3A, students learn to understand information in sentence-length speech in basic personal and social contexts, to read simple, short, connected texts dealing with personal and social needs, and to meet practical writing needs by creating statements and formulating questions in present time with basic word order based on familiar material, predictable content areas, and personal information. They learn to understand and use simple present and present progressive tenses at the high-beginner level. They are introduced to the structure of an academic paragraph. Students also learn about American culture, customs, and sayings as they apply to each of the topics covered.

- Write short, well-organized paragraphs in the present time using level-appropriate grammar and correct formatting with correct punctuation and capitalization.
