ACTFL Language Level Description:
Speakers at this level are able to successfully handle a limited number of uncomplicated communicative tasks by creating with the language in predictable social situations. Conversation is restricted to some of the concrete exchanges and predictable topics necessary for survival in the target language culture. These topics relate to basic personal information covering, for example, self and family, some daily activities and personal preferences, as well as to some immediate needs, such as ordering food and making simple purchases. At the Low Intermediate level, speakers produce discrete sentences mostly in the present tense, and are primarily reactive and struggle to answer direct questions or requests for information, but they are also able to ask a few appropriate questions.

Course Description:
Level 4: Low Intermediate English is comprised of two courses designed to transition from basic to intermediate-level classroom communication for students who are able to create language in predictable social situations. In 4B, students will learn to understand and use modals, nouns, modifiers, and comparisons. They will continue to learn to handle a variety of verbal communicative tasks in straightforward social situations, especially conversation about predictable and concrete exchanges necessary for survival in the United States. They will learn to respond to direct questions or requests for information, ask questions to satisfy basic needs including topics related to self, family, home, daily activities, interests, and personal preferences, as well as physical and social needs, such as food, shopping, travel, and lodging. They will also learn to comprehend simple, sentence-length speech in a variety of basic personal and social contexts, understand short reading texts that convey basic information and deal with basic personal and social topics, and meet a number of practical writing needs, such as requests for information about personal preferences and basic compositions and daily routines, common events, and other personal topics.
