Speakers at this level are able to successfully handle a variety of uncomplicated communicative tasks in straightforward social situations. Conversation is generally limited to those predictable and concrete exchanges necessary for survival in the target culture; these include personal information covering self, family, home, and daily activities, interests and personal preferences. These speakers tend to function reactively by responding to direct questions or requests for information. They are able to express meaning by creating with the language and they typically produce sentence-length utterances but can combine some strings of sentences. At this level, speakers show the starting ability of self-correction.

Course Description:
Level 5: Mid Intermediate English is comprised of two courses designed to introduce intermediate-level communication to students who can handle a variety of simple communicative tasks. In 5B, students will learn to accurately ask questions in present, past, future, and perfect tenses and understand and use nouns, pronouns, and modals. They will continue to learn to speak confidently about routine tasks, social situations, and exchange of basic information related to their work, school, recreation, particular interests, and areas of competence. They will be able to understand sentence-length speech in basic personal and social contexts and derive substantial meaning from listening to connected texts. They will read and understand short, non-complex written texts that convey basic information and deal with personal and social topics and some connected texts featuring description. They will be able to meet all practical writing needs, including linking sentences into texts of paragraph length and structure and writing simple summaries related to work and/or school.
